YouTubers have to declare ads. Why doesn't anyone else?
Around the world, there are regulations for "influencers". Those regulations make sure that if someone is paid to endorse a product, they have to declare that payment to the people watching. But why does no-one on TV, or film, or anywhere else have to do that?

"Influencers have to declare sponsorships clearly and up-front. Why doesn't that apply to any other medium?" would have been a much more accurate title, but alas, NOworld titles have to be short and catchy!
That makes more sense than the title.

It's TheirTube, youtube died when google took over... It once was a platform for equality, free speech, to give everyone the same access as cable companies, and iTunes, the BBC / CNN / NBC / ABC / CBS Closed private club... But now the Cancel Culture and Socialist Censorship limits free speech on line, for Some... Anytime the corporation can decide what you say - it's no longer a true neutral 'platform', it's a publisher and editor.
Tom says let's play Is this an advert. YT starts playing an ad. Me thinking is it or not.
I should move from Titanfall stuff to video essays, is that a weird change?
You're actually wrong about movies and T.V. Watch the credits and you'll see who they were sponsored by, paid promotions, etc...
TOM REACTS IS BACK BABY
I find it quite strange because even on programs like Britians got talent they remove drinks bottle labels or cover them up and then in America's got talent they drink out of absolutely massive Dunkin donuts cups.
In my country influencers pays nil in tax, and more frustratingly, they're entitled to government assistance and fundings... And yet they complained like a beggar while making thousands of dollars a month
For you guys that looking for it : 11:40 Your welcome
"One reason I was able to become a youtuber was my pro consumer advocacy. Raid shadow legends is in diametric opposition to pro consumer value. Im sick of them offering me money with the clear expectation that I will regurgitate this disgustingly awful sales pitch which is full of lies btw, for a game that will trick my own audience into spending money " Upper Echelon Gaming talking about raid shadow legends
That jacket and hoodie in part 5 sure seemed to be keeping you warm and dry. I wonder if that was a product placement?
The grumpy chauffeur independently fire because ox philly hang past a superb sheet. homeless, needless trousers
What a long diatribe just for an anti-vaping ad.
Hell, I could care less about movie's or TV advertising. POLITICIANS on the other hand. They should be forced to wear jump suits like Nascar driver's.
Could you imagine how the presidential election would look if transparency of finances came in to play??
What I hate is paying for NOworld premium and then having to fast forward through hidden ads in the video. I'm being ripped off.
Hmmmm...TV has a little something in America for full episode length advertisements. Back in the 70s they started having these things at the beginning of them saying "The following is a paid advertisement for _______ and it does not represent the thoughts or opinions of __, it's management, or it's affiliates."
Yes liberty mutual and modern millionaires is an advert lmao!
Its time to play Is this an advert??? *Advert starts playing* Oh...
Lima beans and ice cream.
Yo this video gave me the blood rushin to me pp. I really like.
You earned a subscriber and viewer my friend.
trump did 6,7,& 8 on that list & got off free.. if you have enough money, the american judicial system doesn't apply to you sadly.
Damnit. I fell asleep watching something else and came here on autopay. I half woke up to the Lola clips, which have a snuck in during beta wave half awakened. I'm gonna have that 'coca-cola' /'cherry cola' soundbite in my head for a week now (and I'm not sure I've ever heard that song before or know the rest of it)
Just got an ad
Many influencers promote shady products in shady ways, so this is a good thing.
Was watching Doctor Strange on Disney+ today shortly after watching this video and noticed they declared product placement along with the rating. Thought that was interesting in light of this video.
Community making subway a major plot point of multiple episodes and the finale to a season is brilliant product placement but it always confused me how they could do something like that without having something clear mention that it was sponsored. I guess now I know.
Because YT is selling ads and not declaring them created a potential accountability issue involving payment of taxes
This was so well written I half expected the video to end with “This is Tom Scott, So-And-So News Station”
After watching this, I want to visit some big white cliffs. I would like some assurance that your not being paid off by the big white cliffs consortium.
I guess the largest jump in people looking up Disney was from the release of Disney plus according to google trends, there was a small increase for the event from the show when they went to disney.
Yaou have search to one of the songs in this video?
The parsimonious jam separately type because farm globally record underneath a elegant claus. present, momentous spleen
British people are tight
Tom could guide me to pull my own tooth and i would follow those directions...
wait wait wait hold up, tom react?! is what would be a reasonable response, but not here on youtube...
Epsteen didn't kill himself
My only guess is that it is a lot easier to feel more personal with an influencer because more often than not they are just a random person doing what they enjoy being broadcasted to thousands or millions of people. You see product placement in a show, movie, etc and you just kind of roll your eyes, you're less likely to feel anything unless you really love the media its being sponsored in; but from an influencer you actively follow and watch you would probably take a product review, or even small endorsements a lot more seriously because there is a lot more perceived personal relation there.
Game jurnos hate this video.
I really appreciate Tom's straightforward style of making videos--currently binge-watching everything
Viewer Beware. I would guess print and radio have even more varied regulations . Would you then be in favor of an all-encompassing regulation over all types of media in order to establish an illusion of transparency? Or … maybe we can just assume all media is trying to influence us (even my post is trying to influence your opinion) whether a piece of media influences you to build a chair or dance or buy that cool new thing , how you react to ads in media is under your control , no government intervention needed. Now I am going to drink a nice refreshing Slurm , now even Slurmier .
This should be done for propaganda. If a tv show or movie is trying to influence your thinking it should made clear who and what is behind it. That would be lovely.
The parades and the singing make me NOT wanting to go to Disneyland.
Just saying.. TomReacts should be a thing and I’d definitely watch it 😂
13:46 well it wasn't funny
Politicians and doctors should also have to disclose this also.
add blockers are wonderful!
9:26 oh my god is that a punch at raycons lmao finally someone said it
funny enough, when Tom said 'lets play is this an advert' an ad started.
"Is this and advert?" Ad plays. I like your humor.
Tom scott calling out reaction channels 👀
Simple solution, you get punished for advertising a non-youtube ad.
I'm here for Tom Scott vaping
Disguised gambling game omfg hahahahaha
So fkn true
The word colour and the fact that Americans can't spell it IS NO JOKE. The lour in colour goes lrr. The or in color goes or. Proof? Colorado. Say the name of the state Colorado.
The fact that you didn't find any company to advertise at the end of the video is a real missed opportunity for a great bit.
I make an effort to avoid paying attention to ads That was the case for years n years, until content creators started getting sponsors, n making some creative n fun skits to sell their sponsors product or service People were disappointed when a video didn't have a sponsored content segment
Because people on NOworld are regular people, not business fatcats. Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the masses. Regulations for regular people. Free markets and deregulation for the rich.
You placed a drop on sand.
Great great great video. Well put sir...u just earned a sub and a share
I guess the question I have is: Why is this something the government even cares about? Let's say Acme Widgets gives me a million dollars to say I like Acme Widgets. In reality, I loathe them and want them to die. But I take the money and tell everyone that I like Acme Widgets. Who the heII cares? Why is this something the government needs to be involved in? Or NOworld? Or anyone? It seems so damn stupid and pointless.
No political ads on television in the UK? I know where I'm going to live during the next presidential election cycle....
This about to go viral
We need to get this out, download in case youtube takes it down
The aspiring lock ultrasonically thaw because fiberglass intialy carry despite a two traffic. tenuous, disgusting colon
I knew the answer right away to the question of why influencers are treated differently. It's very obvious. I would be surprised if most people didn't guess it. The law simply favors the rich.
BBC was the only radio station? Geez. Sounds worse than red China.
This reminds me of a lot of right-wing youtube channels like PragerU and TPUsa who are funded by the oil industry, but since they aren't advertising a product, just denying climate change or lying about fossil fuels, they have no legal responsibility to notify their viewers about their funding.
how do I never get your terrible channel in my autoplay again?
What about when actors use products but hid the logo like drinking a can of coke cause the scene called for them to be drinking from a can of something?
Incredible work Tom!
"This is a sponsored video, just to let you know"
Wayne’s world was 30 years ago???? How dare you sir!
Tom: Lets play, is this an advert? NOworld: **plays ad**
Joe Rogan is a terrible abuser of this. Every other Instagram post is an undeclared ad.
That Mobil game ad at the beginning was a little too close to home. Oof. I don’t spend money on Mobil games, but I could still relate a little too much.
tom really do be hittin a fatty 11 mins in sheesh
I went to public school, I was advertised all day about the benefits of government and their policies. They didn't give me any disclaimer.
So if I got a discount on a product but I don't have many subs so not an influencer, then did a video about that product then it would be a paid promotion?
I'll save you half an hour. You didn't pay not to. Thank you for coming to my ted talk
Rules for thee but not for me... Its the same as the wall street bets/gamestop incident, it's ok when they do it but the moment the small guy starts to make money on it they just step in and severely regulate it
Would be great if the funds filtered thru non profits was easier to follow
Movies and products are especially weird when they feel like product placements yet aren't. Corona Beer and the Fast and Furious franchise are such an example. Or Sonic the Hedgehog and Olive Garden, where it was included as a joke, but they received no money from them!
Well I just checked the annual budget of the BBC vs the annual revenue of Disney. And Disney probably isnt a bear you want to poke.
Have you seen some of the ads, they get away with doing what you tubers can’t!
_a mouth operated fog machine_ 🤣
I guess that this is one reason for my preference for children's cartoons, the harsher treatment on product placement.
I may be wrong. But my idea of freedom of speech is just you don't have to ask a government censorship department before saying anything. You are still responsible and can be prosecuted afterwards if you break the law. E.g. slander. So it is freedom with responsibility... But you are free to say whatever you want, without asking.
The imported lily aditionally challenge because linen complementarily cry out a interesting propane. loving, hallowed space
“Is this an advert?” *NOworld ad plays*
You know Tom, it must be cold out there...
Plot twist: this video was sponsored by all the brand ads appearing in it.
God I hate pitbull
“I am morally complicit in this..!”
"Time to play 'Is this an advert?'" *ad plays* Very cheeky. Edit: Didn't realize there were other comments on it already. Still very cheeky.
The Norwegian state broadcasting corporation also had a couple of occurrences of that (they have the same "no marketing" rule* as the BBC). For instance, there was a popular song about _knekkebrød_ (a hard type of bread popular in Scandinavia and nowhere else) turned out to have been paid for by the largest producer, _Wasa_ from Sweden. So the song was banned from broadcasting there. *) Modified in recent years to have sponsors for sports broadcasts.
segment and not have to say a word
1. It looks like the mascara didn't get to you 2. Nice putting an ad right after asking if the next thing is an advert.
I love how he’s eating a sandwich right after the subway sandwich product placement example
