Formula 1 cars used to have refuelling in races, but why do they not do this anymore?

Why the fuel is in Kg and not Liters ? What are they fueling with ?
Nobody going to mention the environment effect of refueling?? Don't get me wrong I personally hate evs. I'm just saying this could've also been the reason for cancelling refueling.
Banning refueling was for me the point, F1 startet to go downhill.
You use kg to measure fuel?
can someone explain this for me? If refueling was ever necessary in the first place, then it must mean that an entire full tank of fuel was not enough to finish a complete race, and thus the cars needed to get topped off at some point right? But now, refueling is not even allowed.... so are the engines getting a much higher efficiency per unit of fuel or are the races shorter now in order to allow the cars to finish a complete race without ever adding any fuel to the car?
F1 is unwatchable
Get rid of the rubbish hybrid engines and bring back the greatest sounding race cars
Real reason: singapore 2008.
Refueling was a Fangio thing in the 50's, I didn't start in 1982 at all
Was ok until you got flash fires
I still don't get how redbull can own two formula teams (Toro roso and red bull) from selling a drink. I don't know anyone who drinks red bull.
I do not want to see fuel in f1
Wouldn’t you have to ban pitstops at all with the same arguments? Or even better: completely ban these expensive and dangerous race cars and let the drivers run?
Races must be short if they have to go only with what they can carry at the start.
Refuel on the fly. Then even I would watch.
I’m new to F1 and it seems my timing couldn’t have been better
It should be brought back ...far more strategy than today... All mentioned are mistakes not the norm..out of 1000 stops one did ho wrong..big deal
I'm not saying they should refuel during races, but there are ways to reduce the hazards. Have an interlock between the fuel tank inlet, and the shifting mechanism, so the car could not be put into gear while the fuel hose was attached. Have the fuel line have fast acting, shut off valves at the pump, and near the nozzle. Then design the nozzle to come out with a rearward pivoting motion like when the car moves forward. Both of the valves would automatically close if the nozzle came out. Have multiple fire suppressant nozzles located above every pit box. Also have fire suppressing screens held in rolls above the pit box perimeter that would drop down to contain any fire to that pit box alone.
Now to get tires to last a whole race.
Bro all those stupid stock video clips of people sitting in a couch etc are annoying af. Please only show f1 images or vida
Loved the pit stops when they could refuel. It made the races a little more dynamic.
SAFETY....PFFFF. Auto racing is inherently dangerous and though I do understand the need for safety and cautions, they need to lift most of the restrictions. Let team build a car that they want to build, that's how F1 used to be. Instead of now you have cookie cutter cars. If a driver thinks it's unsafe then don't let him race, get another driver who will. Let's not forget up until the late 70s F1 had a notir reputation for allowing paper machie cars out on the track. And even though these cars were 100% known to be unsafe drivers still climbed into them and raced, And raced hard. No one enjoys watching cookie cutter cars going around the track using the same technology as everyone else and watching the same 3 teams win. All of the modern regulations from the 90's till current have done nothing but stagnate F1. As a famous racing driver one said, "If you can't run with the big dogs don't come off the porch". Let them build and run whatever they want with ZERO restrictions on the car or refuling. If a team wants to run of V12 let them, if they want to run a 4 cylinder with quad Turbo let them, if they want to run a supercharged V10 let them, If a team wants to put a canopy over the cockpit of the car let them, If another team walked around a hybrid let them. This is what used to make F1 so popular and enjoyable to watch. Most people don't remember the crazy wings the teams used to put all over their cars or the six wheeled F1 car, YES 6 wheels. F1 has become BORING to watch. Oh..... Get rid of the ridiculous point system and just go back to the way used to be. What would be better is the only way to get points is to finish in the top 10, other than that no points given for anything .
Verstappen’s incident showed that even the worst possible refuelling scenario resulted in no serious injuries. Grosjean’s incident showed that a race car with a full race load of fuel is more dangerous than one with a quarter race load or so. Safety had nothing to do with why refuelling was banned. It was just an excuse.
Missed the main reason for banning refueling - it made the racing very booring. Drivers almost never tried to overtake on track, just waiting for the next pitstop instead. On-track close racing was almost non-existent. It got better when refuelling was banned (even for most hardcore fans).
Ummm so why do I refuel in Codemasters F1 2020 game?
cleared up. ...hrmn. Cleared up? Yeh. Thank you for clearing that all up. I know it’s a question I’ve had since finishing up the 3rd season of that racing show. I doubt Driving to Survive really brought the subject up.
A million dollars per team per year? So like, the cost of one set of wheels? Seems like money savings is pretty insignificant.
F1 it’s completely dull now
They don't refuel anymore?
Too dramatic and entertaining, better to make it the most lane sport ever
I feel like there aren’t enough pit stops :/ maybe we should only have the choice between super soft tires and ultras. I would like to see more of the team involved. More strategy. At the moment it’s 95% driving which means it’s all on the driver. I’d like for the team to be more involved
The reason I don't watch F1 anymore. Was so much more interesting with refueling
Bring back dual tyre supply and the more durable rubber, start the race with enough fuel to be able to make every lap flat out (fuel management crap). F1 used to be about build the best car and put the best driver you can afford in it then race for the win. Remove the limited numbers of engines and gearboxes, but don't allow them to use separate qualifying ones. Financially if you can't afford the cost go play something else, pay the top drivers less and put the sponsor money back into the cars. The basis of the car should be as simple as "Here is a box, your car must fit in it." and "Your minimum weight is xxx.xx and your maximum is xxx.xx"
3:42 Old Christian Horner looking back at his redbull days for ya'll
Wait....are you telling me that F1 races happen in a single tank of gas?!
@mike You just broke my brain
yes
I thought it was because the FIA was responsible for issuing the refuelling pumps and if due to some technical malfunction they would directly influence the outcome of the race?
It’s been 10 years since I stopped watching F1 and didn’t even know refueling is now banned. It certainly made/broke the race in many occasions back in the day.
Because if you worth told the truth about engineering technology you just wouldn't believe it........ vapour technology
I really want to like or love F1 but only the starts and re-starts are entertaining.. the rest is simply to spread out and boring.
Why they banned refuel? Because they couldn't control so much who is gonna win, like nowdays.
F1 : *banning refueling because it's dangerous Nascar : *trying to figure out how to make refuelling safe
i would like to see the real tire names back
I just think about jos verstappen
you need to mention the green policies, the hybrid era and the 1.6L engines that are more efficient, all stupid marketing strategies to be "greener" but important as now you can fit enough petrol for the entire race
Bring it back. Keep the Q2 tyre rule, but make Q3 cars have to qualify on the fuel they will start the race on. That would really set the cats among the pigeons!
The most obvious point is that cars passing each other due to pit stops is just boring. It's much more exciting to see them overtake on the track.
I feel like it really added excitement to the race
I also think that refueling is up to date anymore. It's now about the hybrid engine and reliability, so getting fuel doesn't really makes sense in this context...
=NEED RETURN REFUELINGS ............THOSE WERE BROUGHT DOWN TO HUMILIATE THOSE WHO WERE MOSTLY OKAY WITH THIS NO SAFETY WAS REAL REASON
I was a big fan of F1 when I was a kid and remember watching Massa's incident like it was yesterday. I recently started watching F1 again and everything looks so much nicer nowadays, cars with their halo, no refueling so pit stops are sub 2s or even less, and uhh... Kimi and Alonso still racing
people really are blinded by nostalgia about refueling
MONG US
Because gasoline is explosive. That would be my guess. Burning to death probably sucks, just ask that Jordanian pilot.
It was banned cause the people running FIA are complete idiots
Why not refuel usinf jerry cans? Saves costs from having expensive machines
100kg of fuel is about 135 liters. Tracks average 305km. So F1 cars do about 6 or 7 mpg.
Yes i would love to see them refueling again.. but its not going to happend .. i gues...
I'm disgusted with the way F1 has turned into the "Mercedes Show".
The video is misleading. First, it's totally incorrect to say refueling would not bring anything new to F1, because it is assuming that the tank would be exactly the same as now. If they would bring back refuelling , the tank would obviously be smaller, so the lap times would definitely be way better. Second, it would bring more strategy to the race, so it would definitely bring more emotion and challenge. It is totally wrong to say refuelling did not make any difference. The devil is in the details. I thought people who made this video would be smarter to notice these little things...
Me reading the title: Because f*cking _fire???_
Because F1 teams apparently aren’t talented enough to change tires & fuel both. That’s the only real answer.
I'd still think it be fun if the Teams had to do their Qualifying runs on racefuel nowadays in Q2 atleast this would force teams to make a strategy call on Saturday that could make or break the race already Does a Team go lighter making them faster in Quali and forcing them to manage the load in the race Or do they fill up more sacrificing Qualifying in favour of pushing more in the race Probably would benefit from having points for Quali tho
Refueling? Yes, please.
Just bring back the grid girls if you want major improvements in F1! 🔥😍
I think it was banned because they want to be totally entertainment-free by 2030. Next up, overtaking.
refueling made races even more boring. Its just dumb nostalgia
Bring back one-lap qualifying. That will mix up the grid, save cost and make things more exciting
Yes
2:54 Ferrari: How much fuel do you need Michael?? Schumi: Yes.
To be honest... I didn't realize that they've never been refueling..
Yes
How the f are they supposed to finish the race if they don't refuel???? Its not like those things have good miles per gallon......
yes they have good mpg.
it is the regulations that they aren’t allowed to refuel. No need to watch this vid anymore.
Formula E is all in solution package💯👀
I don't give a fuck about the FIA I don't give a fuck about the EPA
safety???? base on what measurement? how many people was die during pitstop? if all we're all thinking is safety, don't go high speed then. most if not all dead cause by high speed or wall. oh yeah i have an idea how about F1 without wall for safety sake..
bring back refuelling , god i hate the super long cars
Never knew refueling was banned...
V8 & V10 !!!!!!!!!
I was at the Long Beach Grand Prix with Rodger Penske and his crew. I saw a fueling crew member for Mario get Ethenal on himself and it ignited. He's waving his hands running around like a chicken with no head. No one could see the flames, he was lit up. Poor guy they finally used a extinguisher on him. It was horrid.
I'd rather have "safety" in the front... Regards from Tabasco, México [Land of The Olmecs]!
Stupid question.
when hydrogen comes into play. they will bring it back.
Me before watching: This'll be because of all of those times a racer drove off with the fuel line stuck in his car or they pulled the hose out while the fuel was still flowing causing fires, right? Me after watching: Pretty much that plus money plus no real impact on race results.
Gimmicks work on casual fans. So make a course with a couple of ramps for shortcuts and you'll get wide range of appeal. However, your hardcore fans will hate you if you do it. 🤣
Tires was spelt wrong
So once the fuel is gone they just scrap the f1 car?
It is not safe
So what do they do if they run out? How did they make the tank smaller and ban refueling? Why would a small tank not need to be refueled but the previous big tanks did need refueling(
because the engines are build to be powerfull and efficient at the same time
Short Answer: EU Emissions Regulation
They should bring back the v8 and v10...but in the name of efficiency F1 is not what is use to be that's why fans are falling off with this sport. I followed it when micheal, prost, senna were around the track so the golden era is gone behind us
Much self explanatory
In one way refuelling reduced strategy options: 1. You can't go anywhere without fuel 2. As refuel stop made car slower, it didn't make any sense to stop early
newbie.... or as they said you're casual fan.
Re fuel needs to return .. lower the the amount onboard to say 50 kg. Force the teams to gravity feed dead man switch equiped nascar style containers that only hold 25kg of fuel.. when its attached to the car it kills the engine . Only when the can is removed is when you can re-start the car.
And your part of the reason they're becoming cookie cutter cars. NOT EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS EQUAL OR FAIR!!!! JUST LET THEM RACE!!!
I want refuel back.
I would just like to see more pitstops in F1 races.
Personally I loved the refueling era. The whole lot added to the complexity of the strategy and ever evolving tactics required to win this
I think Formula E should allow battery swapping.
Stop with the stupid memes
Did the whole team get fired after the Verstappen incident or just the refuelling guy?
Electric cars will replace these and it won;t be as loud.
It's called Formula E bro
