  • I worked in the food service industry for years, I'd never want to give up the tip system. We make way more money that way. Not to mention service in America tends to be overall way more attentive than in, say, England.

    SeraphsWitnessSeraphsWitness13 dager siden
    • @Shamrock You're entitled to that opinion. I prefer the US system based on the stats: - Average UK waiter income is 8.16 per hour. In the US it's 13.30. Even with the conversion that's significantly better for the workers. - The average cost of a dine-out meal in the UK is 4.4% higher than in the US. - Because of the tip system, people routinely report getting far more attentive service in US restaurants. So you end up paying slightly more in the US (10-15% more, if you're tipping properly), but it's far better for the waitstaff, and you get better service. For me, that's worth it.

      SeraphsWitnessSeraphsWitness6 dager siden
    • Tbh I prefer the system in England. Minimim wage is the same as any other job so not really missing out and I don't have to worry about anything when paying the bill, just pay the total

      ShamrockShamrock6 dager siden
  • There are some historical wrongs. Unless the first restaurant was open in Little Italy because that's where tipping is from. Basically mafia used restaurants as upfront and wasn't paying staff.

    LichlimLichlim16 dager siden
  • the concept of having to tip certain percentages is so foreign to me. In my country tipping is completely voluntary and waiters are paid normally. So here a tip is just a genuinly nice thing they get on top of their already normal salary.

  • Yeah, tipping culture is trashy and should frankly be illegal to force managers to properly pay their staff. Like, I hate this logic. "The menu says it costs 10 dollars to receive this service?" "Yup." "So I'm going to pay you 10 dollars." "Inconsiderate cheap asshole!" Imagine you would have to pay extra to any cashier in stores, just because. For no real reason. Because tipping is just you paying people salary that are not your employees when you already paid for the service..
