How robots made this food commercial look effortless

Creating the perfect food commercial isn’t just a matter of great styling and a mouth-watering dish. Sometimes, you need a robot.
Steve Giralt is a “visual engineer.” Check out his Instagram for more:
The team that built this rig shares amazing BTS as well.
Or explore his website as he starts working on educational content about his work:
Giralt began his career as a stills photographer, but he saw potential for more thanks to his hobbies in engineering. A new discipline was born: visual engineering, using robotics, advanced camerawork, and a lot of creativity to create moving images that have never been seen before. His Smores have lit up Times Square, and, in the video above, you can watch how he uses trial and error (and more than a few robots) to drop the perfect lime.
Giralt’s toolkit includes Arduino programming, Maya, welding, epoxies, super-expensive cameras that can shoot incredible slow motion, and a lot of elbow grease and ingenuity. This form of commercial art shows how technology can make incredible images happen - and you don’t always need computer graphics to do it.

  • Regardless of the robot sweeteners, 30 second in, I can see that you have never lit a product for one of these shots. 1. The liquids being advertised are Always are room temp to prevent fogging and let the lighting dept light the ice cubes and the back side of the glass/bottle/vessel. Fog and drips are added in post production, and the 'ice cubes' are expensive acrylic props [that don't float btw] 2. Getting a good splash can take days of crew time and generally involves a 'drop rig' for the item, and sometimes an oversized close up prop and glass/bottle/vessel are made. 3. Turntables are motorized to get an exact performance every take. Props Guy. lol

  • Wondering if this costed less/the same/more if it was done with 3D instead. I'd easily bet ~20 times less. I'm not too much knowledgable with 3D either but making a glass, ice cubes, lime would be like ~2-3 hours of work for someone with some experience, the only hard part most probably would be getting the lighting/materials and the water physics right.
